Neurofibromatosis, adiposity and muscle atrophy

Szymon Pelc has been struggling since birth with an extremely rare disease that occurs at a frequency of 1 in 50,000 births - neurofibromatosis. Symptoms of this genetic disease include skin lesions, skeletal deformities (dysplasias and pseudo joints), headaches, hypertension, and even vision complaints (strabismus) or behavioral and developmental disorders. Neurofibromatosis is a treatment based on nullifying bothersome symptoms and monitoring changes in the patient's condition. Simon has regular follow-up appointments with various specialists, including a dermatologist, neurologist and orthopedist, among others. Each doctor focuses on the relevant aspect of the disease, tailoring treatment to the patient's current needs.

Cooperation with a physiotherapist is crucial for Simon. Regular physiotherapy sessions help him maintain joint mobility, strengthen muscles and prevent further deformities. Muscular atrophy disease also increases the risk of scoliosis and other spinal abnormalities, which requires extra attention and specialized interventions.
