Plastering of the lower extremities

It plays a key role in increasing the range of motion of patients with neurological problems. The method is used whenever manual or physical methods prove insufficient to lengthen and relax tissues.

For whom

Plastering is a technique used in physiotherapy for children and adults with cerebral palsy, Duchenne muscular dystrophy, and cerebrocranial injuries, among others, i.e. wherever neurological disorders affect the patient's range of motion. Orthopedic plastering becomes a key therapeutic component when there is an increase in muscle tone, muscle stiffness, toe-walking, joint linearity disorders or general restriction of range of motion.

Main advantages of lower limb plastering

Our approach is aimed not only at improving motor function, but also at improving the overall quality of life of our patients.

  • improve flexibility and muscle length
  • gait pattern modification
  • pain relief
  • reduction of muscle tension
  • support plane improvement
  • Increased acceptance of lower limb orthoses
  • improvement of the ankle joint line
  • improve flexibility and muscle length

Plastering step by step

Thorough preparation of the limb. Cleaning and drying the skin.

The use of a pad of cotton wool or other material to prevent chafing.

Allowing to harden for about an hour.

This is important! The procedure is carried out by an experienced specialist, so that the cast will be properly fitted and fulfill its therapeutic role.

Types of plastering

Redressive plastering and hamstring plastering are two specialized methods used in orthopedics and rehabilitation. Both methods use plaster dressings, but differ in application and therapeutic goals.

Redressive plastering

It is designed to gradually correct joint deformities that may result from such causes as congenital defects, trauma, or neurological diseases. The technique involves applying a cast in such a way as to gradually change the alignment of the joint, leading to an improvement in its function and appearance.

For whom?

Redressive casting is often used for:
- clubfoot,
- joint contractures caused by burn scars,
- deformities resulting from diseases such as cerebral palsy.

What does it consist of?

It requires repeated dressing changes as the patient's condition improves, and careful monitoring of progress to adjust the amount of pressure and direction of correction. This allows for an increased range of motion - the tissue can gradually regenerate, and thus the length of the muscle can increase.

Brake plastering

It is oriented toward preventing the aggravation of existing deformities or movement disorders, especially for patients with neurological diseases or dislocations.

For whom?

Hamstring casting is often used for:
- joint stabilization
- reduction of muscle tension
- prevention of uncontrolled movements
- reduction of excessive or harmful movement patterns.

They are often used in children with cerebral palsy to help prevent the development of spasticity and to improve overall motor function.
