MEDEK Therapy

MEDEK method - what is it? The treatment, also known as CME (Cuevas Medek Exercises), is an innovative physiotherapy method developed in the 1970s by Chilean physiotherapist Ramón Cuevas. The name MEDEK comes from the Spanish term for Método Dinámico de Estimulación Kinésica, or dynamic method of motor stimulation.

The main goal of the MEDEK method is to induce automatic postural reactions and movements against the force of gravity, which stimulates the nervous system for independent motor development. As a result, children learn correct movement patterns, and their nervous system is stimulated to become naturally neuroplastic.

From this article you will learn:

For whom is CME therapy intended?

At our center, the MEDEK method is used primarily for children with motor developmental delays, including:

  • cerebral palsy (MPD),

  • genetic and metabolic disorders,

  • Muscle tension problems (both excessive and decreased),

  • Balance and coordination disorders.

This method is particularly valuable for children who require intensive stimulation of the motor system and support in achieving motor independence.

How MEDEK therapy works - principles and working method

The basis of the CME method is to actively provoke the child to move with minimal help from the therapist. The therapy process begins with:

  • A detailed assessment of motor development using the CME assessment protocol,

  • discussions with parents, discussing needs and establishing a therapy plan.

During the exercise, we apply several key principles:

  1. Stimulation by gravity - the child performs movements in positions that require working against the force of gravity, which strengthens anti-gravity reactions and postural control.

  2. Minimal manual assistance - the therapist's support is gradually reduced so that the child can increasingly control movement independently.

  3. Inducing automatic motor responses - the goal is to learn movements that are useful in everyday life, such as sitting down, standing up, walking or maintaining balance.

  4. Dynamic nature of exercises - rehabilitation for children is varied and activity-oriented, rather than static positions, which increases the effectiveness of therapy.

Benefits of MEDEK therapy for children

Regular work through MEDEK rehabilitation brings a number of measurable results.

  • Improved postural control - children learn to maintain a stable sitting and standing position and while walking.

  • Strengthening muscles and coordination - anti-gravity exercises increase muscle strength and balance between muscle groups, which affects the fluidity and precision of movements.

  • Stimulation of balance and defense reactions - children learn to react to loss of balance and protect themselves from falling.

  • Improving gait and mobility - the MEDEK method supports first attempts at independent walking and improves gait quality in higher functioning children.

  • Development of body awareness - intensive stimulation of deep sensation and proprioception allows children to better feel their bodies in space.

Why is CME therapy effective?

The effectiveness of MEDEK rehabilitation is due to its multi-level action.

  • It stimulates neuroplasticity in the brain, accelerating the formation of new synaptic connections.

  • It teaches correct movement patterns, minimizing the risk of compensation that could perpetuate incorrect habits.

  • It stimulates proprioception, or deep sensation, which promotes the development of body awareness and motor control.

Clinical studies and cases described around the world (including Brazil and Dubai) confirm that intensive, regular work with the CME method can produce results beyond initial expectations, enabling children to reach a motor level appropriate to their biological age.

Medek rehabilitation in Paley Europe practice

At our center, CME therapy is an integral part of a comprehensive rehabilitation program for children. With a personalized approach and the use of modern therapeutic techniques:

  • We monitor the child's progress at each stage,

  • We adjust the intensity and type of exercises,

  • We promote normal motor development in conjunction with classical functional therapy.

This holistic approach improves the chances of independence and quality of life for young patients.

Summary - why choose the MEDEK method at our center

MEDEK method - what is it? It is an effective and modern method of rehabilitation of children with disorders of motor development. By actively engaging the child, using gravity and stimulating automatic postural responses, it promotes neuroplasticity and normal motor development.

MEDEK's regular rehabilitation gives children a chance for greater independence, better postural control, increased muscle strength and improved coordination and mobility. By choosing our center, parents can count on an individualized therapeutic program, professional care and real results that translate into their child's daily functioning.

At our center, CME therapy is an integral part of a comprehensive rehabilitation program for children. Dorota Owczarek and Sylwia Stupnicka, experienced physiotherapists who specialize in working with children requiring intensive stimulation of the motor system, are responsible for conducting sessions using the MEDEK method. Thanks to their individual approach and modern therapeutic techniques:

  • We monitor the child's progress at each stage,
  • We adjust the intensity and type of exercises,
  • We promote normal motor development in conjunction with classical functional therapy.

This holistic approach improves the chances of independence and quality of life for young patients.

Rehabilitation of adult patients after ischemic strokes
Ischemic stroke is one of the most common neurological diseases and one of the leading causes of disability among adults. It occurs when the blood supply to part of the brain is suddenly interrupted or significantly reduced. This is most often the result of a blood clot, embolism, or narrowing of the blood vessels. The lack of oxygen and nutrients leads to damage to nerve cells, and in […]
