Inauguration of the Parents' Council

The PEI Parents' Council provides a new platform for developing extended care that takes into account the needs not only of patients, but also of their siblings, grandparents and participants in their daily lives, such as their school or local community. Under this initiative, the comprehensive approach to care includes not only medical aspects, but also such matters as accommodation, coordination of patient care, and organization of activities at the clinic outside of treatment, for example. This is an important step in our Paley Patient and Family Centered Care mission.

During the inaugural meeting, both in person and remotely, we discussed key issues concerning the needs of Patients and their caregivers. We would like to thank all the participants who gave their time and energy to participate in this important discussion. Your experiences and suggestions are invaluable to the work of the Paley Institute and perceptions of how we can continue to improve processes and provide even better care for our Patients.

The meeting was attended by both parents and the patients themselves, as well as the Institute's administrative team. Dr. J. Michal Deszczynski, Chief Operating Officer of the Paley European Institute summarized the first meeting of the PEI Parents' Council:

"The inaugural meeting of the Parents' Council was an extremely valuable experience. I would like to thank all Parents for their involvement and openness when discussing important issues for our community. Your voices are extremely important to us and inspire us to continue to improve our processes and the care we offer. I would also like to thank the entire team at our Institute for their support and dedication in organizing this event. Together as a PEI community, we can achieve even more for the benefit of our patients and their Families."

Parents also expressed their appreciation for the Paley Institute's new initiative:

"We are grateful for this meeting. It turns out that the Institute is aware of many issues and they are introducing new solutions on an ongoing basis. We thanked many issues i.e. hospital care or physiotherapy. Only now we have seen many issues that we are not able to see on a daily basis from the patient's perspective. We were also able to show what we would like to change or improve. We invite and encourage you to participate in PEI Parents' Council meetings, because our voices are very important and make a difference so that the whole Family and Patients can be taken care of in the best possible way here."

Thank you to everyone involved for participating in this historic event. Our work to improve patient care is a continuous process, and your involvement and support are crucial to our collective success.

Rehabilitation After SEMLS Surgery—What Can the Child Expect in the Year Following the Procedure?
What does rehabilitation look like after orthopedic surgery for a child? SEMLS (Single-Event Multilevel Surgery) allows for the simultaneous correction of several orthopedic problems in children with neurological disorders, primarily cerebral palsy. The surgery itself, however, is only one stage of treatment. Equally important is a properly planned rehabilitation program following SEMLS surgery, which helps the child regain mobility and learn […]

Home Care After a Child's Orthopedic Surgery – A Practical Guide for Parents
A child’s return home after orthopedic surgery is an important stage of treatment. This is when parents take on a large part of the daily care—helping with mobility, personal care, administering medications, and following specialists’ recommendations. Home care following a child’s orthopedic surgery requires proper preparation, as the first few weeks after the procedure may look completely different from the family’s previous daily routine. […]

What is SEMLS surgery, and who needs it?
What is SEMLS surgery? Children with neurological conditions, such as cerebral palsy (CP), often struggle with muscle tone disorders, contractures, and musculoskeletal deformities, which over time can affect their mobility and independence. In such cases, symptomatic treatment alone may not be sufficient—a comprehensive approach is necessary that takes into account both the functioning […]
