What is osseointegration? Find out how this innovative method has impacted implantology
Osseointegration is an innovative and revolutionary method used in implantology. It is a breakthrough solution for amputees, so it is worth taking a look at what it consists of. In the following article, we will answer the question: what is implant osteointegration, how long this procedure takes, and who should benefit from it.
Importance of osseointegration in improving quality of life after limb amputation
In Poland, up to several thousand amputations are performed annually, and it is estimated that the number will increase. The need to remove all or part of a limb is most often a consequence of chronic diseases (e.g. diabetes or atherosclerosis), circulatory disorders, infections, cancer, congenital defect of a limb, burns, frostbite, accidents or trauma, and the procedure has a huge impact on people's lives, both physically and psychologically. Therefore, it is worth opting for innovative solutions focused on prosthetic limbs, which can significantly improve the quality of life of amputees.
The use of limb osteointegration in prosthetics opens a new chapter in the treatment of amputee patients. It makes it possible to forget the problems associated with ill-fitting prosthesis funnels, which can cause abrasions, discomfort and movement limitations. Unlike traditional prosthesis fixation methods, osseointegration minimizes pressure points, which is of great importance in the process of rehabilitation and adaptation to a new life situation for limb amputees.
What is osseointegration?
Osseointegration (osteointegration) is a method of improving mobility, during which the doctor prepares a bone canal using special tools, and then places an implant in it. During the operation, unnecessary soft tissues and fat are removed, thus minimizing the distance between the bone and the skin, which reduces the risk of complications. At the same time, the doctor makes sure that the muscles in the leg function properly. The next step is to create a hole in the leg, which will become the link between the implant and the external adapter. Importantly, in the case of implant osteointegration, the duration and number of procedures depend on the patient's predisposition - sometimes one procedure is enough, and sometimes it is necessary to divide the operation into two separate procedures.
With osseointegration, post-amputation prosthetics are much more effective and comfortable for the patient. Integrated into the bone, the implant provides better stability, reduces discomfort and allows more natural movements. As a result, Patients are able to return to normal life sooner, participating in daily activities, professional work or sports.
Osseointegration - for whom?
It is assumed that most amputees qualify for osseointegration surgery. However, it is worth noting that certain factors may increase the risk of complications or limit the effectiveness of this method. These include ongoing chemotherapy, diabetes, peripheral vascular disease, bone irradiation, pregnancy, smoking or persistent infection. Therefore, a thorough evaluation of the patient's health is always necessary before proceeding with osseointegration. Doctors must take all these factors into account to assess whether the Patient is a suitable candidate for the procedure and what risks the surgery entails.
After the osseointegration procedure
Osseointegration is a modern method in prosthetics, representing a breakthrough in the treatment of amputees especially of the lower limb. However, the surgery itself is not the end of the road to a better life. It is important to remember that pain symptoms after surgery are natural, so for a period of 2 to 6 weeks the patient must take painkillers, first in the form of intravenous infusions and then in tablets. After the operation, it is also important to keep the area where the bone and implant meet clean and dry for the first 7-10 days, and then to nurse the wound daily.
After osseointegration surgery, rehabilitation is also important, which can begin as early as the first or second day after surgery.
