Trauma surgery
Trauma surgery is a branch of medicine that deals with the surgical treatment of the musculoskeletal system, including: bones, joints, ligaments and indirectly muscles, tendons and nerves affected by trauma. An injury is considered to be caused by various factors, such as thermal or mechanical, including falls, beatings or being hit by a car. The scope of trauma surgery depends on how severe the injury is and includes damage to internal organs, bone fractures and breaks, brain injuries and any soft tissue in the body.
Trauma surgery requires doctors to have a very broad education and a long practice in the field.
It includes a wide variety of very different treatments. Among the most popular are:
- Joint arthroscopy - an endoscopic procedure that allows for effective diagnosis, assessment of injury and repair of damage using minimally invasive tools,
- Bone fracture repair - trauma surgery uses a variety of techniques, depending on the location, severity and type of fracture, to stabilize bones, improve their function and preserve their function,
- Arthroplasty - a procedure that involves replacing an entire joint after damage caused by osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis,
- corrective surgery - a procedure that corrects problems associated with anatomical defects that limit function and can cause long-term problems if not corrected; it is often performed on children.
