Family Centered Care

Parents are the first and most important source of support for a child with health challenges. That's why modern pediatric medicine is guided by the principle that the best treatment results are achieved when the family is actively involved in the treatment process and the medical staff treats them as partners. This model of care is called Family Centered Care - or family-centered care.

This approach is particularly important in the treatment of children with chronic diseases and complex needs, such as conditions like cerebral palsy, rare diseases, orthopedic defects and ultra-rare diseases. Where therapy requires time, a systemic approach and multidisciplinary support, the family is a key link in the therapeutic process.

From this article you will learn:

What is Family Centered Care all about?

Family-centered care assumes that parents have the right to be part of therapeutic decisions, and that their presence, knowledge of the child and involvement are essential for successful treatment. This approach:

  • Respects the needs and values of the family,
  • is based on transparent and two-way communication,
  • takes into account the individual context of the child's life - home, school, relationships, environment,
  • treats the family as a partner, not an observer,
  • allows adapting the treatment plan to the patient's real possibilities and goals.

In practice, this means keeping caregivers fully informed, teaching them about post-hospitalization care, shared decision-making, and ongoing collaboration between the family and the medical team.

The main pillars of the Family Centered Care approach

  • The family as a therapeutic resource - it is the family that knows the child best and supports him at every stage.
  • Shared medical decisions - made with the participation of parents, in accordance with scientific evidence and family values.
  • Communication without barriers - clear, complete and understandable information at every stage of treatment.
  • Education of parents - preparing them for further care at home, rehabilitation and support of the child's development.
  • Attention to the emotions and capabilities of the family - psychological, social and logistical support, if needed.
  • Flexibility in treatment planning - tailored to the family's rhythm and the child's needs.

It's a model that involves not just treating the disease, but strengthening the family as a whole.

Scientific confirmation and expert position

The importance of Family Centered Care is confirmed by scientific research, clinical practice and official recommendations. The Committee on Human Development of the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN) in its 2025 resolution emphasizes that:

  • A child's recovery is inextricably linked to the well-being and resources of his or her family,
  • A child's separation from his parents can lead to long-term developmental and psychosocial problems,
  • Active parental participation in treatment improves health outcomes, builds family competence and reduces disease-related stress,
  • The model is also cost-effective, reducing system costs and improving the job satisfaction of medical personnel, protecting them from burnout.

The PAS committee also notes the need to create conditions in hospitals for the long-term presence of the family with the child - including the provision of spaces that promote rest, privacy and security. This is not just a concern for comfort - it's part of the treatment.

Where does this model work in practice?

The Family Centered Care model is applied in major pediatric and neuro-orthopedic centers around the world, where children's treatment is based not only on advanced medical methods, but also on partnership with the family. In such places, parents are not just observers of the therapeutic process - they are an active, full part of it, participating in consultation, education, decision-making and daily care of the child.

One of the centers where this standard is put into practice is the Paley European Institute. This is where a team of doctors, physiotherapists, orthotists and support specialists work hand in hand with the family, taking care of both the child's health and emotional comfort and sense of security. Parents are involved in therapy planning, as well as in the process of education and preparation for care at home. Family-centered care works particularly well in the treatment of disorders that require long-term therapy, such as cerebral palsy, skeletal dysplasias and tibial hemimelia, where systematic support, understanding of the family's needs and consistent communication by the medical team are crucial to treatment outcomes and the child's development.

Family Centered Care in practice, therefore, means more than just the presence of a parent in the hospital - it is the conscious building of a therapeutic relationship based on trust, shared responsibility and a partnership exchange of knowledge, which translates into better clinical outcomes and a greater sense of security for the whole family.

Summary - why the Family Centered Care principle should be the standard

Family-centered care is not a trend, but a modern medical standard that:

  • improves treatment outcomes,
  • Supports child development at every stage,
  • strengthens the family,
  • lowers long-term health care costs,
  • increases the efficiency and job satisfaction of medical teams.

Parents are not just observers of therapy - they are a key part of it. And the child, regardless of health difficulties, has a chance to grow, develop and realize his or her potential in a supportive, understanding and safe environment.
