Paley European Institute and the Osseointegration Group

Osseointegration is a revolutionary technology for people who have undergone upper and lower limb amputations, offering an innovative solution in cases where traditional socket prostheses fail. The success of this method and its rapid global growth would not have been possible without close, interdisciplinary collaboration among doctors, engineers, and scientists. A key pillar of this collaboration is The Osseointegration Group (OG), of which the Paley European Institute in Warsaw is an integral part. Together, they form a network of experts dedicated to restoring patients’ freedom of movement without pain.

The Origins and Mission of The Osseointegration Group

The Osseointegration Group (OG) is a Sydney-based organization founded in 2010 by Professor Munjed Al Muderis, a distinguished orthopedic surgeon and pioneer in the field of modern osseointegration. The group was established to provide amputees with a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach that offers the best chance of regaining full mobility. OG’s philosophy is based on the belief that every patient is unique, and therefore their case must be considered through the lens of various specialties, including surgery, biomedical engineering, and physical therapy.

Thanks to this approach, OG has developed proprietary, accelerated treatment protocols, such as OGAAP-1 and OGAAP-2. These protocols allow the entire procedure to be completed in significantly less time than traditional methods, reducing the recovery period from several months to just a few weeks.

The Paley European Institute as a European center of excellence

Since January 2021, this technology has been available in Poland thanks to the Paley European Institute in Warsaw, which has officially joined the global OG network. The Institute not only performs procedures in accordance with the highest global standards, but also actively participates in advancing the field of limb loss science. This collaboration means that patients in Poland have access to the same innovations used in leading centers in Australia and the Netherlands.

The team at the Paley European Institute provides holistic care for patients—from helping them make an informed decision about surgery, through precise surgical procedures and pain management, to specialized physical therapy and the fitting of final prostheses. A key role in this process is played by an interdisciplinary team, which develops a personalized treatment plan in consultation with the entire OG team of experts.

A global support network and the future of technology

The strength of the Osseointegration Group of Australia lies in its global reach and continuous exchange of knowledge. Currently, there are 12 medical centers worldwide that are part of the network, and the number of procedures performed has already exceeded 900 cases. The group also conducts active educational activities and scholarship programs for surgeons from around the world, which helps to spread this life-changing technology.

The shared vision of OG and the Paley European Institute goes beyond current capabilities. Researchers are working on futuristic technologies, such as targeted muscle reinnervation and the implantation of sensory electrodes. In the future, this will allow patients to control robotic prostheses using intentional control—that is, the power of thought alone. Thanks to this international collaboration, osseointegration is becoming an increasingly common practice, offering hope for a dynamic and fulfilling life to amputees around the world

Clubfoot isn't the end of the world
Clubfoot is a congenital defect that is present at birth. It is characterized by a specific foot alignment consisting of four elements: plantar flexion, heel varus, cavus deformity, and forefoot adduction. A foot deformed in this way resembles a golf club in shape, hence the English name for the condition, “clubfoot.” In Poland, this condition affects approximately 1 in 1,000 newborns. As Dr. Kapiński explains, the key […]

Monika's Story: How Osseointegration Restored Her Freedom After 36 Years of Living with an Amputation
Monika has been living with an amputated leg for 36 years. Over the past 15 years, she has struggled with increasing difficulties related to her socket prosthesis, which at one point brought her to the brink of deciding to switch to a wheelchair. Her story is a journey toward osseointegration, an innovative method involving the implantation of a prosthesis directly into the bone, which eliminates the need for […]
