June 30 - World Arthrogryposis Day
Its course, origin and severity are individually variable. The disease can involve the upper limbs, lower limbs or a single limb simultaneously. And while there is no clear etiology, contracture and joint stiffness are most often caused:
- underdevelopment or complete absence of muscles in a particular location,
- disorders of motor innervation of muscles,
- intrauterine positioning or
- intrauterine viral infection.
Other, causes can be direct deformities of the joints, as well as defects in the connective tissue.
Such a wide spectrum of problems that affect patients with arthrogryposis, as well as the rare occurrence of the disease (1 in 10,000 births), means that there are few centers offering proper treatment. Achieving improvement requires a great deal of experience and individualized treatment planning for each patient.
You can hear more about it at the Arthrogryposis press office.
