Underdevelopment of the radius is a rare condition affecting the upper limb, with an estimated frequency of 1 in 30,000 to 1 in 100,000 live births. It is an extremely rare condition characterized by functional deficits resulting from partial or complete absence of the radius bone. Underdevelopment of the radius manifests as deformity of the hand and wrist, deviation of the wrist, reduced grip strength, forearm deformity or shortening, and thumb deformity. This condition hinders normal functioning, as in many cases, the hands are located near the elbows.
Treatment of underdevelopment of the radius
Our pediatric orthopedics focus on ulnarization rather than centralization or radialization, which are techniques associated with a high risk of complications. At the Paley European Institute, we treat underdevelopment of the radius using ulnarization. This method, developed by Dr. Paley, involves transferring the hand to the ulnar side of the ulna bone, which helps restore muscular balance.
Underdevelopment of the radius also requires physiotherapy, which is an essential part of the treatment process at the Paley European Institute. Therefore, we provide not only orthopedic care but also support during the recovery period. Please feel free to contact us!
