Underdevelopment of the femur is an extremely rare congenital condition. It is characterized by the shortening of the femur bone, often accompanied by knee and hip deformities and soft tissue contractures. Occasionally, underdevelopment of the femur can also coexist with symptoms of tibial hemimelia. As a result, the child experiences difficulties in mobility and stability. Congenital underdevelopment of the femur typically affects one side, although it can occur bilaterally. The exact causes of the condition are unknown, but it is believed to be potentially triggered by certain medications, chemicals, viruses, or radiation.
