Andrzej had a dangerous traffic accident. His motorcycle collided with a passenger car. As a result of the impact, he suffered a multi-organ injury in the form of intracranial bleeding, a shoulder joint injury, and an open fracture of the left calf.
A pilon fracture of the distal epiphysis of the tibia and a damaged ankle joint presented a significant challenge for the medical team. Andrzej underwent multiple surgeries at the clinic where he was admitted after the accident. Unfortunately, a bone infection developed in the limb, and an amputation procedure was suggested to Andrzej. His strong will to fight and the support from his family and friends did not allow him to give up.
After extensive searching, he finally came across the Paley European Institute team. Following a review of his medical documentation, the physicians offered a solution that gave Andrzej hope.
The PEI team proposed a proprietary solution based on the limb lengthening technique known as bone transport. The procedure involved the complete removal of the infected and dead bone and the use of an external apparatus. The process of distraction osteogenesis was employed, in which the gap is filled with newly formed bone tissue through natural healing processes. Over time, the newly formed bone calcifies, regenerates, remodels, and strengthens, functioning like any other bone.
The prospect of living without a leg caused fear, a sense of injustice, and, above all, a loss of hope for a normal life. However, thanks to the experience gained in Florida, the Polish team was able to independently perform the procedure, restoring hope not only for Andrzej but also for his family.
