Arthrogryposis is a congenital condition characterized by joint stiffness, skeletal and multiple joint deformities, and muscle contractures. Congenital arthrogryposis can affect the upper limbs, lower limbs, or a single limb. Although there is no definitive etiology, the most common causes of contractures and joint stiffness are muscle underdevelopment or absence in a specific location, motor nerve innervation disorders, intrauterine positioning, or intrauterine viral infection. Other causes can include direct joint deformities as well as connective tissue defects.
The wide range of problems affecting patients with arthrogryposis, combined with the rarity of this condition (1 in 10,000 births), means that there are few centers offering proper treatment. Achieving improvement requires extensive experience and individualized treatment planning for each patient.
How do we treat arthrogryposis?
At the Paley European Institute, we specialize in diagnosing and treating arthrogryposis. We perform procedures such as joint releases, corrective osteotomies of the tibia and femur, hip joint reconstruction, knee and ankle joint reconstructions, and upper limb reconstruction. For arthrogryposis, we also offer rehabilitation. We provide the expertise of an experienced team of physiotherapists, orthotists, and a psychologist.
